Final Fantasy VII Remake Script Comparison: Chapter 16 – Part 2
Chapter 16 continues with a brief scene with Palmer, already establishing his odd tea preferences. And as chance would have it, he spots Sephiroth wandering the halls, a reference to how Palmer is the one who witnessed Sephiroth killing the President in the original.

After the presentation, the crew meets Hart, the mayor’s assistant. In Japanese his name is ハット (hatto), which was evidently supposed to be a pizza joke, and thus could also be rendered as “Hut.” E Remake decides to stick with the original translation’s “Hart” though, either for consistency or because “Hut” would be an odd name.

ハット はい | Hart Yes. |
This time, Mayor Domino is expecting them and reveals that he’s actually working for Avalanche. In the original, the mayor is never explicitly allied with Avalanche, but his response to the MAKO (魔晄爆発 ; makou bakuhatsu ; “mako explode”) password in the original may imply that he’s sympathetic to their cause. The original translation interpreted “explode” as “cause it to prosper,” but it may also be possible to take it as “get rid of mako entirely” such that Shinra would go out of business and he could be the true mayor.

Speaking of being the true mayor, Mayor Domino is once again mayor in name only, with his office tucked away in Shinra’s archives.

Mayor Domino then offers to update their keycard. In the original, Cloud had to use clues in the library to find the right password to give the mayor to obtain the keycard. Also, Mayor Domino’s keycard went up to floor 65 then.

ドミノ 「言っておくが、私のカードでは 65階までしかのぼれんよ」 | Domino “But my card will only get you to the 65th floor.” |
The mayor is incredibly upset that that’s as far as his security permissions go, and we get a slightly more direct reference to the original “librarian” line.

He regains his composure and then tells the crew that they’ll need to find another secret Avalanche collaborator in the Recreational Facility on the 63rd floor. This area was located on the 61st floor in the original game and is named リフレッシュフロア (“refresh floor”) in Japanese both on PSX and for Remake.

But in order to get another keycard from this other Avalanche collaborator, the crew will need to give him a password. This password and Domino’s two lines afterward are straight from the original (at least in Japanese). The original translation had to simplify this password to BEST to make the word puzzle work, but Remake doesn’t have that restriction.

And while we’re on the topic of the passwords from the original, the robots around the archive all have references to the other options Cloud was presented with. And as an additional easter egg, the robots only give the viable answers from the original. In the PSX version, ORBS / 魔晄最高 (makou saikou ; “mako (is the) best”) and HOJO / 神羅爆発 (shinra bakuhatsu ; “shinra explode”) were never possible answers.

And for a bit of a deep cut, there’s even one robot that says シチョウ サイテイ? (shichou saitei ; “(the) mayor (is the) worst?” Some unused Japanese text from the original game suggests that initially there was a system that allowed the player to input individual kanji characters to form any number of combinations for the password. The mayor then had lines reacting to some of these other combinations, including a reaction to if the player input 市長最低 (shichou saitei ; “(the) mayor (is the) worst”).

We cut to a scene with Hojo and Aerith. Hojo is apparently more concerned with his research than Shinra’s goals, which was implied in the original too. During the original meeting of Shinra’s leaders, the president has to ask if Hojo’s research will interfere with their plans, suggesting that finding the promised land is more Shinra’s goal than Hojo’s.

The secret collaborator initially expresses suspicion of Cloud and company, which makes sense considering how much they stand out. There was at least one NPC in the original who was also wary of Cloud, but honestly it’s surprising that no one else bats an eye. Though to be fair, it’s possible that the employees trust Shinra’s security so much that they can’t even conceive of unauthorized individuals making it that far up.

Hojo talks to himself a bit here, musing on Sephiroth’s presence. The English translation’s use of “their offspring” may be confusing, or at least, it was a bit confusing for me as I initially assumed he was referring to Sephiroth’s parents. But the Japanese is roughly “(I) wonder what kind of child it would become?” which makes it clear that the “their offspring” in the English is meant to refer to Aerith’s and Sephiroth’s offspring were he to force them together.
