Final Fantasy VII Remake Script Comparison: Chapter 8
We start the chapter with a familiar scene. The dialogue is in a different order, but still follows the same beats. In fact, most of the Japanese text is largely unchanged. E Remake, for its part, has a possible reference to the original translation with Cloud’s use of “flower girl.”

It’s Aerith. And you are…? よろしくね」 | “I’m Aeris, the flower girl. Nice to meet you.” |
エアリス また 会えたね | Aerith Nice to meet you again. | 「……また、会えたね」 | “So, we meet again.” |
| Cloud “Again,” huh? | ||
| Aerith What? You don’t remember? | 「…… (たしか、初対面だ) | “Don’t you remember me?” Yeah, I remember… Never saw you before |

エアリス スラムの教会 伍番街 | Aerith An old church in the Sector 5 slums. 5番街よ」 | “This is a church in the Sector 5 slums.” |
エアリス いきなり 落ちてくるんだもん 驚いちゃった | Aerith You came crashing through the roof without so much as a “look out below.” おどろいちゃった」 | “You just fell from above. You really gave me a scare.” |
エアリス お花畑 クッションになったかな | Aerith Fell right into my flower bed. Lucky for you. 運、いいね」 | “The roof and the flower bed must have broken your fall. You’re lucky.” |
Aerith Like, really. | ||
クラウド あんたの花か 悪かったな | Cloud S-Sorry, I-I didn’t mean to— | クラウド 「花畑…… | Cloud “Flower bed…is this yours?” |
クラウド 「それは悪かったな」 | Cloud “Sorry about that.” | ||
エアリス 気にしないで | Aerith Don’t worry about it. お花、けっこう強いし ここ、特別な場所だから」 | “That’s all right. The flowers here are quite resilient because this is a sacred place.” |
Aerith They’re a lot tougher than they look. This place… It has a kind of power. |
As usual, the English has more personality in Remake and fixes some old mistakes. For example, Aerith now properly makes small talk about materia, instead of mistakenly asking if Cloud has any and then answering her own question. (See my series on the original for more info.)
Japanese Remake | English Remake | Japanese Original | English Original |
---|---|---|---|
エアリス ね クラウド これ 落としたよ | Aerith Before I forget—you dropped this when you landed. | 「ね、マテリア、持ってるんだね」 | “Say, do you have any materia?” |
Cloud Thanks. | ||
エアリス わたしも持ってるんだ | Aerith I’ve got one too. |
クラウド マテリアなんて 珍しくもなんともない | Cloud You and everybody and their mother. |
エアリス でも わたしのは特別 | Aerith Not like mine, no. It’s special. It’s good for absolutely nothing.” |
Aerith Mine’s not good for anything at all. |
E Remake also restores the “Though, I don’t mind” line to better transition from talking about how her materia is useless to how its presence comforts her. The original translation skipped over that bit. There are still minor references to the old translation though, like the “you just don’t know how to use it” line.

---|---|---|---|
| Cloud Bet you just don’t know how to use it. | Cloud “…good for nothing? You probably just don’t know how to use it.” |
エアリス そうかもね | Aerith Could be. でも、役に立たなくてもいいの」 | “No, I do…… it just doesn’t do anything.” |
Aerith Though, I really don’t mind. | ||
| Aerith Just having it is enough. It was a gift from my mother. | “I feel safe just having it. It was my mother’s.” |
| Aerith Pretty crazy, huh? Us meeting again like this. You should stay awhile. | “Say, I feel like talking. Do you feel up to it?” |
After all, here we are meeting again.” I don’t mind Got nothing to talk about |
If Cloud walks away from Aerith after she asks him to stay and talk, she’ll sarcastically complain about his cold attitude as she did in the original, making Cloud feel guilty for damaging the flowers.

エアリス お花の手入れ 終わったところだってのにな | Aerith And just when I had finished tending the flowers here… I wonder whose fault that is. It’s not easy to grow them, you know. Poor flowers.” |
Aerith Gotta start over… | ||
Aerith Just me, myself, and I… |
You can also hear Reno at the front door, as before. The Japanese line is exactly the same, but E Remake chooses to interpret it as Reno talking to his subordinates rather than directly to Cloud. This makes sense, considering the door is fully closed this time. The Japanese doesn’t use any pronouns here (as usual), so that it’s literally just “give a little more time,” and thus can be taken either way.
Japanese Remake | English Remake | Japanese Original | English Original |
---|---|---|---|
Hang back. We’re not in any hurry. | 「もう少し、時間をやるぞ、と」 | “I’ll give you a little more time.” |
Cloud goes to talk with Aerith and Reno immediately busts in. He quickly notes Cloud’s mako eyes this go around. He doesn’t comment on that until later in the original.

レノ あらま 魔晄の目 | Reno Well whaddya know, you’ve got the eyes at least. 魔晄の目」 | Reno “They were…Mako eyes.” |
And Aerith once again asks Cloud to be her bodyguard, using similar phrasing to the original in Japanese. The English translation reworks it a bit to fit the new context.

---|---|---|---|
| Aerith You don’t mind, do you? Bodyguard work’s not too different from merc stuff, right? | Aeris “Say, Cloud. Have you ever been a bodyguard?” |

Aerith Uh… I guessed! From the sword! | ||

E Remake does go on to reference the original with “but it’ll cost you.”
Japanese Remake | English Remake | Japanese Original | English Original |
---|---|---|---|
クラウド いいだろう でも安くはない | Cloud Fine, but it’ll cost you. A lot. しかし、安くはない」 | Cloud “OK… but it’ll cost you.” |

| Aeris “How about if I go out with you once?” |
The English translation also has Reno comment on how weird Cloud is, like before. The Japanese line here just has Reno comment that Cloud must be the real deal, so the translation gets a bit of a bonus reference.
Japanese Remake | English Remake | Japanese Original | English Original |
---|---|---|---|
Well, you’re weird enough to be one… | 「……おねえちゃん こいつ、なんだか変だぞ、と」 | “…Hey sis, this one’s a little weird.” |
| Reno What class? | ||
Cloud First. | ||
Reno If you’re gonna bullshit me, at least try to make it believable… |
And of course, Aerith warns them not to step on the flowers, with Reno repeating/relaying her message.

---|---|---|---|
| Aerith Hey! Watch the flowers! | Aeris “Don’t fight here! You’ll ruin the flowers!” |
レノ だってよ | Reno You heard the lady. だと」 | Reno “And don’t step on the flowers……” |
During the fight with Reno, if you continuously run over the flowers, Aerith will eventually yell “You’re gonna catch holy hell!” This is a callback to one of the soldier’s lines in the original. None of the Japanese lines are particularly reminiscent of anything from FF7, so clearly the translators were having some fun here.

Aerith Through the attic—maybe we can get out that way! |
They make their way across a hole in the floor, with Cloud offering to help Aerith over. It’s a tiny thing but the Japanese 大丈夫だ (daijoubu da ; “it’s okay”) is exactly the same as the original. (Incidentally, the original English translation isn’t quite accurate here. Go here for more info!)
Japanese Remake | English Remake | Japanese Original | English Original |
---|---|---|---|
クラウド 大丈夫だ | Cloud Come on. 俺が受け止めてやる」 | Cloud “All right. I’ll hold them off.” |
Just as Aerith is crossing, the Shinra officers appear and start shooting. This time around, Reno immediately tells them not to shoot, instead of momentarily getting into it and then suddenly realizing that that isn’t what they want to do. The original translation missed the part where Reno corrected himself, making it seem like he really did want to kill her, which was not in fact true. In any case, Reno is far more protective of her in Remake, compared to his relative nonchalance in the original.

---|---|---|---|
No shooting! | Reno “The Ancient is getting away! Attack! Attack! Attack!” |
Aerith Aw, man… | ||
| Cloud Hey! You okay!? | ||
| Aerith Probably! | ||
Aerith …Or maybe not. | ||
レノ ケガなんかさせてみろ おまえ 終わるぞ | Reno If there’s so much as a scratch on her…you’re done. They shouldn’t have put up a fight, I say!” |
Cloud tells Aerith to run, which is a dialogue option in the original, and then he gets the idea of dropping the chandelier, as opposed to barrels. (Though barrels can later be found in the attic as an easter egg.)
Japanese Remake | English Remake | Japanese Original | English Original |

Once again, they make their way across the rooftops. In English, Aerith makes a “mosey” reference, an infamous line of Cloud’s from much later in the game.
Japanese Remake | English Remake |
---|---|
Aerith Okay. Up for crossing the rooftops? |
Aerith See that pillar over there? There’s a station right by it. |
Aerith Shall we mosey on over? |
Cloud Let’s. |
Aerith asks Cloud what he’s going to do next. In the original, she asks this after they’ve successfully made it to her house.

---|---|---|---|
| Aerith So…what’s next for you? | Aeris “So what are you going to do now?” |
We then get some more familiar dialogue, with Cloud wondering why the Turks were after Aerith. The Japanese is also largely rewritten here, only following the same conversational beats. (They’re) the worst.”) line is more similar to Cloud’s dialogue in the original where he lists the nefarious things the Turks do. Her English line, on the other hand, aligns more with her original response of “Yep, they sure look like bad guys.”

---|---|---|---|
He was one of Shinra’s Turks. | クラウド 「タークスだよ、あいつらは」 | Cloud “They’re the Turks.” |
クラウド タークスがあんたに なんの用だ | Cloud What’s a Turk want with you? | Cloud “But, why’re they after you? There must be a reason, right?” |
| Aerith Dunno… | ||
エアリス ね タークスって ソルジャー候補をスカウト するんでしょ | Aerith Hey, don’t Turks keep an eye out for potential SOLDIERs and stuff? ソルジャーの人材をみつけだし スカウトするのが役目だ」 | Cloud “The Turks are a Shinra organization. They scout for possible candidates for SOLDIER.” |
Cloud They do more than just scout for candidates. | ||
クラウド タークスの仕事は ほかにもいろいろあるんだ | Cloud Turks get called in to handle all kinds of situations. | クラウド 「それにウラじゃ 汚いことをやっている」 | Cloud “They’re also involved in a lot of other dirty stuff on the side.” |

| Cloud “Maybe you do. You want to join?” |
They chat a bit more as they go along, and then Aerith stops Cloud from getting too far ahead of her. The dialogue here is almost exactly the same in the Japanese. And again, the English is rewritten to be a bit smoother. いじわる (ijiwaru) literally means “malicious/mean-spirited/unkind.” In this context, Aerith is using it to complain about Cloud’s jab at her. “Petty” works well here because in Remake Cloud was clearly frustrated that Aerith wouldn’t tell him why the Turks are after her, so his snide comment is seen more as a way of getting back at her for that.

| Aeris “Oh! You’re terrible!” |
After climbing up to a higher location, they look out at the wall surrounding Midgar and Aerith talks about her reluctance to leave. While she doesn’t express this fear in the original (at least within the Midgar segment), she does later talk about how noisy and overwhelming it is when she listens to the planet. One can imagine that if the planet is that loud in her little church, then the great outdoors would likely be worse.

| Aerith Too much. A whole world, bursting with life… だから何を言ってるのか よくわからない」 | Aeris “It’s full of people and noisy. That’s why I can’t make out what they are saying.” |
They make it back to solid ground and Aerith warns Cloud about the monsters in the area. In Japanese, Cloud uses the phrase 高が知れる (taka ga shireru), which breaks down to literally mean “(their) upper (limits) are known” and thus is used to express that something/someone “doesn’t amount to much” or “isn’t a big deal.” The English translation goes for a more familiar way of conveying Cloud’s dismissal of the monsters, using a common “tough guy” phrase.

Cloud I’ve fought scarier things in my sleep. |
Cloud and Aerith proceed to the Sector 5 undercity, with more great banter along the way. When they arrive, they see a news broadcast on the latest bombing, and Scarlet makes an early appearance. In the original game, we didn’t meet the directors of Shinra until their meeting in the Shinra Building. But they get more screen time in Remake so that they’re more established characters.

Nearby the TV is an NPC who talks about not trusting either Shinra or Avalanche, just like a guy from the original. The Japanese dialogue is largely the same here. This time around, the English gets in on messing up Avalanche’s name, calling them “Avarice” as the Japanese calls them アバンチュール (abanchuuru ; after the French word “aventure”).

Aerith leads the way to her house and introduces Cloud to her mother. “And this is Cloud. My bodyguard.” matches the original translation almost exactly. Not that it’s a super complex line or anything, but it’s still a nice touch.

Cloud gets ready to head back to Sector 7, but Aerith insists on showing him the way. The English “I’ll show you the way” line matches up with the original more than the Japanese does, surprisingly. The conversation follows the same general flow, but this time Aerith pokes fun at Cloud instead of him declaring that he doesn’t need help from a girl. And as before, Elmyra convinces Aerith to wait until tomorrow.

After Aerith goes upstairs, Cloud can talk to Elmyra for this little comment. In Japanese she begins to say “You…” but then thinks better of it, whereas in English she says “It must be tough (for Aerith)” and then stops. Either way, this feels like a hint at Aerith’s prior experience with SOLDIERs, which Elmyra also brings up in the original game.

While Aerith delivers some flowers, Cloud has time to roam around town. And we get a chance to catch some NPC dialogue from the original. In that same vein, the materia shop owner gets some lines from the original, too. Interesting to note that the English translation lines up slightly on the second line, beginning with “Got” and ending with “here.” A pretty minor thing and could easily be a coincidence, but there it is.

マテリア屋 いいマテリアがそろってるぜ 見てってくんな | Materia Vendor Got nothin’ but the best here. | “Got a lot of good materia here. Why don’t you look it over?” |
And finally, the item shop owner also gets a line from the original. E Remake not only makes more sense in comparison to the original translation, but also gets across her curtness, too.

Oates finds Cloud and tells him and Aerith about a sick guy who scared off a couple of kids. This is the guy from the original who lived in the pipe in Sector 5, and who Aerith was referring to in the infamous “This guy are sick” line (which was corrected on E PC at least!).

ムギ ビョーキなんだって あと うでに数字が 書いてあるんだ | Oates They say he’s sick or something. Oh, and he had some kind of number tattooed on his arm. | エアリス 「ここの人、 病気みたいなの」 | Aeris “This guy are sick.” | Aeris “This guy is sick.” |
Cloud and Aerith save the kids, and on the way back they talk about Tifa. The dialogue here matches up a bit with when Aerith questions Cloud about Tifa in the original, too, though mostly only with the use of ティファって (Tifa tte ; roughly, “Say, this Tifa person…”) and ムキになる (muki ni naru ; “to get irritated / worked up”). E Remake changes the ムキになる line to fit the new context better. The point of the line is that Aerith is pressing Cloud because it seems like something more is going on there. By pointing out that he’s getting worked up in Japanese, she’s suggesting that Tifa must therefore be someone special to him, so the English hones in on that.

| Aerith Is Tifa, like…your girlfriend? | Aeris “Is Tifa…a girl?” |

No way! Yeah, that’s right |
エアリス ムキになってる | Aerith But she’s someone special. | エアリス 「そ~んなにムキにならなくても いいと思うけど」 | Aeris “You don’t have to get THAT upset…” |
The sick guy shows up at the kids’ hideout. Amazingly, the Japanese subtitle for his moans lines up exactly with his dialogue from the original. E Remake opts not to subtitle it, though. To be fair, groans and grunts can look weird when written out in English.

Afterwards, Cloud can roam around the kids’ hideout. There’s some dialogue that resembles Cloud’s exchange with some kids in the Beginner’s Hall in the original. Basically talking about how the kid wants to be strong, and implying that you need 素質 (soshitsu ; “natural talent/aptitude”) to get to be like Cloud.

Once Cloud does some work around town, they head back to Aerith’s house. Elmyra tells Aerith to go get the bed / guest room ready, as before, and then privately tells Cloud to skedaddle. The dialogue is rewritten a bit in Japanese too, but a few lines like ソルジャーなんだろ? (sorujaa nan daro? ; roughly, “You’re a SOLDIER, right?”) and (konya no uchi ni deteitte kurenai kai? ; “Could you leave sometime tonight?”) are the same.

| Elmyra but would you leave tonight? Without any fuss—no questions? エアリスにはないしょでさ」 | “could you please leave here tonight, without telling Aeris?” |

Elmyra You can’t have it both ways. |
Cloud then has a dream about the past as he sleeps. The Japanese is almost identical to the original, just swapping out 彼女 (kanojo ; used to refer to one’s girlfriend) for 恋人 (koibito ; lit. “lover/sweetheart”). As usual, the dialogue feels much more natural now in E Remake, but there was clearly an effort to keep some of the original translation too, with Cloud’s “Not really” and his mother’s following “there are temptations in the city” and “I’d feel a lot better if.” Interestingly, in the last line, E Remake specifically references the PSX translation with “the perfect type for you.” E PC (the translation on all modern ports) changed that line to “I think that would be best for you.”

Cloud attempts to sneak out of the house. As in the original, Aerith will come out of her room and scold him if he makes too much noise, though the dialogue itself is different. Cloud’s 見つからないように (mitsukaranai youni) is the same though; roughly, “May (I) not be discovered.”
