Final Fantasy VII PC English - Cloud threatens Don Corneo

Final Fantasy VII Script Comparison: Wall Market – Part 2

Cloud can get makeup and underwear for his outfit by going into the Honeybee Inn. E PC really cleans up these lines to better reflect the Japanese.
Considering that Cloud’s Japanese line doesn’t mention anything about “fooling” anyone, and the fact that the E PSX translation of both Cloud’s and Aeris’ lines are so similar, it makes me wonder if Cloud’s E PSX line was another version of Aeris’ line that accidentally got copy/pasted over his actual line. I guess we’ll never know what happened here.
In any case, as E PC suggests, Cloud is saying something like, “There’s something in here that I need for my disguise. I can tell.” And Aeris is sarcastically like, “Uh-huuuuh. Sure there is.”
誤魔化す (gomakasu) is a verb that basically means “to deceive,” “to dodge (a question/issue),” or “to gloss over.” So more literally, this is a bit like “That’s how you’re going to gloss over (your real intentions), huh?”

JapaneseE PSXE PC
「おっ!右手にかがやく『会員カード』
 どうぞ、お通りください」
“Hey! Is that a “Member’s Card” I see
shining in your hot little hand?”
“Please, come in.”
クラウド
「ここに女装に必要ななにかがある。
 俺にはわかるんだ」
Cloud
“…Hmm.
That’s how you’ll fool them.”
Cloud
“Looks like I need to go inside
to complete my disguise.”
エアリス
「…………ふ~~~~ん。
 そうやって、ごまかしますか」
Aeris
“………Hmmmmmmm.
So that’s how you fooled them.”
Aeris
“…Hmmmm.
Sure, good excuse…”
クラウド
「いくぜ!!」
Cloud
“Let’s go!!”
Cloud
“See ya!”

Entering the Honeybee Inn…
The Japanese title for this room is literally “(The) Love Nest.” (愛のすばこ ; ai no subako) Apparently the translation wanted to go for more vivid imagery.
If Cloud chooses this room, he meets with a vision of himself.
頭を抱える (atama wo kakaeru ; lit. “to hold one’s head”) is a reference to how Cloud holds his head when he has his episodes, but also means “to be at wits’ end.” In that sense, this could also be “Freaking out all the time won’t solve anything.”

クラウド
「ん……?
 あんたなのか……?」
Cloud
“Hmm……?
You……?”
Cloud
“Hmm?
You!?”
「こんなところでなにしてる?」“What are you doing in a place like this?”
『そっちこそ、こんなとこで
 遊んでていいのかい?』
“That’s what I want to ask you.
Should you be foolin’ around here?”
“That’s what I wanted to ask you.

“You think problems will just go away
just thinkin’ about them?”

Cloud’s vision continues to criticize him.
Another reading of this could be: “You’ve realized that nothing will change just by taking a back seat and watching, right?” (Literally “by only viewing from afar”)
According to the Ultimania Omega book, this is a reference to Cloud’s unsociable nature as a child.

JapaneseEnglish
『遠くからながめてるだけじゃ
 なにも変わらないって
 気づいたんだろ』
“You can’t change anything by just sitting
back and looking at it.”
クラウド
「なにいってる?」
Cloud
“What are you saying?”

The vision then says this cryptic line, then vanishes.
The English is very literal here. A simple “It’s started” might have been better, considering how vague this line is in Japanese. In any case, it seems to basically be saying that events have been set in motion, or that a certain person is on the move/has begun to act.

JapaneseEnglish
『動きはじめたみたいだよ』“It’s started moving.”
クラウド
「なにが?」
Cloud
“What has?”

A Honeybee Inn worker revives Cloud, then chides him.
This line is roughly, “You can’t get so nervous.” Basically, Mukki is assuming that Cloud got so nervous about being with a girl that he fainted.

ムッキー
「ふぅ~♡
 よかったぁ♡」
“Phew,
I’m so relieved.”

「ぼうずっ!!
 倒れちゃったんだって?」

“Bubby!!

ムッキー

Mukki
“No, no, no.”

   ああ……?
   うう……?
“Don’t get so uptight.”
   Huh…?
   Ugh…?

The Honeybee girl then excuses herself.
While there are literally “a lot of ‘adult’ things going on”…in this case, she means more that she has personal reasons for ditching Cloud. オトナの事情 (otona no jijou ; lit. “adult circumstances”) is a vague excuse that’s used to avoid talking about something the speaker doesn’t want to talk about.

JapaneseEnglish
「ごめんなさいね……♡
 いろいろと大人の事情ってもんが
 あるのよ♡」
“I’m so sorry…
There’s a lot of ‘adult’ things
going on…”
「これ、おわびのしるし♡
 大切にあつかってね」
“For your inconvenience,
Please take this, okay?”

Cloud can talk to the Honeybee girls as they’re getting ready. (One of them applies makeup for him.)
This one talks about how hard it is to apply makeup, then notices that Cloud is listening to her. Cloud can then make a comment.
While まだ (mada) does literally mean “not yet,” in this context it’s more like “You’ve got a long way to go (to get good at this).” As an example, my Japanese 101 prof taught us to respond to the common comment 日本語が上手ですね (“Your Japanese is so good!”) with いいえ、まだまだです (“No, I still have a long way to go.”)
The use of “not yet” in the English translation here actually turns this option into something more ominous, implying that something is about to be the matter.

JapaneseE PSXE PC
「ハァハァ……。
 ……ハードだわ」
“Phew……
…it’s so tiring.”
「あら!!」“Oh!!”
「どうかしら?」

After leaving the Honeybee Inn…
This is the guy who was scared to go inside before, so rather than this being a general statement of “it’s natural for people to be cautious,” he’s probably saying that he can’t help but be wary/cautious.

JapaneseE PSXE PC
「くっ~~! ボクもお花ほしい~!
 でもでも、かわいい女の子の前だと
 きんちょうしちゃって……」
“Uuuuuuh! I want flowers too!
But, I get so nervous in front
of cute girls…”

「なんだか、自然と

“It just seems natural to get cautious…”

Aeris changes the price of her flowers depending on the guy. She charged the other men here 300 gil or more for one, so Johnny is actually thanking her for selling one to him for only 1 gil, not for giving him both a flower and a gil.

JapaneseE PSXE PC
「エアリスちゃん~~。

“I’ll treasure this!
I’m going to dry it and
keep it for good luck.”

Cloud and Aeris infiltrate Corneo’s mansion and find Tifa.
The original E PSX line here reads better to me. “Explain what you’re doing?” as a question just sounds odd. They might’ve forgotten to change it to a period after combining the sentences.

JapaneseE PSXE PC
クラウド
「ティファ、説明してくれ。
 こんなところで何をしているんだ」
Cloud
“Tifa, explain. What are
you doing in a place like this?”
Cloud
“Tifa, explain what you‘re
doing in a place like this?”

Tifa explains what happened while Cloud was away.
The English leaves out why Barret told Tifa to leave Don Corneo alone: because he’s just a small-time criminal (and thus poses no threat).

JapaneseE PSXE PC
ティファ
「五番魔晄炉からもどったら
 怪しい男がうろついていたのよ」
Tifa
“When we got back from
the Number 5 reactor,
there was this weird man.”
Tifa

「ここのドンの名前が出たわけか」

“That’s when

Tifa
“Right, Don Corneo.”
「バレットはコルネオなんて

“Barret told me
to leave
the lech alone…”
ティファ
「なんだか気になって仕方がないのよ」
Tifa
“But something’s
been bothering me.”

Afterwards, Tifa comments on Cloud’s appearance.
Both English lines are a little off the mark, in my opinion. While the Japanese is literally “now that I take a closer look at you,” I feel like this phrase is often used more metaphorically, and in this case means “now that I’ve had some time to really take you in,” rather than saying that her opinion on Cloud’s appearance hinges on whether she looks closely at him.

JapaneseE PSXE PC
ティファ
「フフフ……その格好
 よく見るとナカナカじゃない」
Tifa
“Ha ha… You know, if you look
closely, you’re not so bad…”
Tifa
“Ha ha. You know, you don’t look bad,
if ya don’t look closely.”

Cloud, Tifa, and Aeris confront Corneo.
The, uh…part of the anatomy referred to is changed for the E PC version. The Japanese doesn’t specify, so it’s left completely up to the players’ imagination.

JapaneseE PSXE PC
ティファ
「手下に何をさぐらせてたの?
 言いなさい! 言わないと……」
Tifa
“What did your assistants find out?
Talk! If you don’t tell us…”
クラウド
「……切り落とすぞ」
Cloud
“…I’ll chop them off.”
Cloud
“…I’ll chop it off.”

Corneo tells them he was only following Shinra’s orders.
E PSX goes with a very literal reading of the Japanese department name here, but later uses “Peace Preservation” in the Shinra building. E PC unifies the terms.

JapaneseE PSXE PC
エアリス
「……ねじり切っちゃうわよ」
Aeris
“…I’ll rip them off.”
Aeris
“…I’ll rip it off.”
コルネオ
「ほひ~!

Don Corneo
“Waaaaaaaaaaah–!

クラウド
「治安維持部門総括!?」
Cloud

Cloud
“The head of Peace Preservation!?”

Finally, Tifa threatens Corneo as well.
While the E here makes it sound like Corneo is scared, in Japanese he more or less seems to retain his composure and basically praises Tifa for being so bold. えらい (erai) is literally “great/remarkable/admirable.”

JapaneseE PSXE PC
ティファ
「……すりつぶすわよ」
Tifa
“…I’ll smash them.”
Tifa
“…I’ll smash it.”
コルネオ
「ほひ……ねえちゃん……本気だな。
 ……えらいえらい」
Don Corneo
“…You’re serious, aren’t you…
…ohboy, ohbooy, ohboy.”
「……俺もふざけてる場合じゃねえな」“…I’m not fooling around
here either, you know.”

Don Corneo then reveals Shinra’s plot.
He’s saying that Shinra is going to crush AVALANCHE’s hideout along with them, not that Shinra is going to infiltrate it.
もろとも (morotomo) is an adverbial noun meaning “(all) together.”

JapaneseEnglish
コルネオ
「神羅はアバランチとかいう
 ちっこいウラ組織をつぶすつもりだ。
 アジトもろともな」
Don Corneo
“Shinra’s trying to crush a
small rebel group called AVALANCHE,
and want to infiltrate their hideout.”

The crew starts to leave, but Don Corneo stops them.
A more literal reading of this would be “At what kind of time do you think villains like me babble on about the truth like this?” …which is in desperate need of some rephrasing. (Remake handles this very nicely, but we’ll save that for another time.)

JapaneseE PSXE PC
コルネオ
「すぐ終わるから聞いてくれ」
Don Corneo
“No wait, it’ll only take a second.”
「俺たちみたいな悪党が、こうやって
 べらべらとホントのことを
 しゃべるのはどんなときだと思う?」
“How do you think scum like me feels when
they babble on about the truth?”
Why do you think scum like me
babbled on about the truth?”
1 死をかくごしたとき
2 勝利を確信しているとき
3 なにがなんだかわからないとき
They’ve pretty much given up on life
   They’re sure they’ll win
They don’t know what the hell’s going on
Because I’ve given up on life
   Because I’m sure I’ll win
   Because I’m clueless

He then pulls a lever, opening up a trap door and sending our protagonists falling to their doom…
